What People Say

"Our HOA was maintained by Sunrise for approximately 37 years of our 40-year history. Several of the Sunrise workers are real assets to their organization, namely Paul, Wesley, Michael, Dennis, and Jesus. They were always professional, respectful, conscientious, and friendly. However, every decision seemed to go back to the owner, Bob Wellerding. After becoming my HOA's landscape chair, several of my neighbors told me about difficulties with communication and shared their thoughts that some neighbors got more attention than others. Some neighbors claimed to have reached out repeatedly but got no response, whereas one neighbor and former board member proclaimed at an open forum that his calls were answered on the first ring. Some neighbors agreed that Sunrise gave prompt replies, while others said they had tried repeatedly for years to get replies. The discrepancies became undeniable. Another neighbor and spouse of a former board member mentioned at an open forum that he had received an autographed Joe Di'Maggio baseball from Bob. His wife, a former board member, immediately mentioned to him that he should not have publicly admitted that. As landscape chair, I tried for over a year to work cooperatively with Bob, asking for him to work with us to improve our neighborhood while suggesting opportunities for additional work beyond our HOA contractual services. He would have been paid for any work outside our HOA contract, of course. It seemed like a win-win situation. Bob would get paid for pruning down our overgrown shrubs, which had crept larger and larger after years of hedge trimming. The flash freeze of December 2022 ended up solving that problem for us. Bob seemed to want to continue maintaining our neighborhood the way he had for decades and did not seem interested in considering improvement opportunities to add a more updated appearance to our HOA. He also did not seem interested in considering a respectful, mutually beneficial, collaborative future with our management team if it meant making any changes to the way he had maintained our HOA since the mid-1980s. The board even asked former landscape chairs about their experience working with Bob. They all claimed that Bob could be difficult to work with and that a certain amount of coddling was necessary. In the end, our board evaluated 3 companies, including Sunrise, when considering who would be our next landscape maintenance company. The board evaluated each of the 3 companies on over 20 different criteria. Sunrise was the cheapest, but the other companies offered a better value for the money. The HOA Board went in a different direction, hiring a competitor for 2024 without having to raise our dues for our neighbors. Bob responded to the news by dispersing an unprofessional email to all ~173 households in our HOA two days before Christmas, 2023. It's unfortunate that a once-great company has such an unprofessional leader at its helm. If Bob could learn to trust good people who work for him with some leadership responsibilities, Sunrise might be much better off. Most of our neighbors are happy or at least open-minded about the change. Some are livid. We certainly wish Sunrise the best despite unprofessionalism displayed by the owner. Sunrise was always very good at mowing and blowing leaves. One property manager we interviewed had over a decade of experience with all 3 companies that we considered before making our final decision to change from Sunrise to a competitor after almost 4 decades. She summarized Sunrise succinctly by saying, "They're known in our industry as mow and blow specialists, but don't shine at any of the details." That seems like a pretty accurate description. In Sunrise's defense, our HOA should have paid more for all neighbors to receive excellent service and communication. In my opinion, we may not have paid Sunrise enough for all neighbors to receive quality service & communication. Perhaps that explains why some neighbors had such an excellent experience, while others had the opposite experience."
